The following are real-time reactions from my first ever viewing of Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942). Read my full review here.
I had really high hopes for this movie, with the word Yankee in the title I thought for sure I found a movie with some sort of baseball connection. Movie hasn’t started yet, but I just caught a glimpse of the movie poster. I’m getting a strong feeling that there is no baseball in this movie.
Oh, yay, it’s in black and white. This is the first of what I feel will many movies in black and white on this list.
Yep, I’m an idiot. I saw Yankee and went straight to baseball. A normal person would have gone with the song Yankee Doodle Dandy (duh Jennifer, it is the name of the movie).
I think I had this movie confused with Damn Yankees. Just googled the movie poster for that..and it doesn’t look like a baseball movie either. Geesh.
This guy just said his publisher resents Cohan impersonating the President of the United States. Good thing he will be long gone before Lorne Michales and the crew of Saturday Night Live come around.
Who sets off a cannon in the middle of town? Sleeping baby or no sleeping baby!
Are they dressing up as leprechaun’s? I don’t get it. Ok, Matthew just informed they are part Irish and that is part of their act. Makes more sense now,
A man named Cohan is worried about going to meet the President. Where have I heard this before? (regardless of the spelling difference, it is still a funny coincidence)
Oh!! It’s a musical! If It can’t be about baseball, a musical is the next best thing
Um, what is a Skirt Dancer?…She is lifting her dress up for everyone as her parents smile from the side stage? I did that in church once when I was 5, I couldn’t sit for a week.
Are dancing in ‘black face’? 😳 Didn’t other movies that had sequences’ like this have the scene removed for future showings?
Googled it, Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn had a longer but similar scene censored for future showings. #themoreyouknow
George gets jumped outside of his theater. Parents don’t care. Second movie in a row where I question the parent child relationship. Hopefully George doesn’t turn in to Sid from Toy Story.
Aww, the family actually gets along!! They refuse to be split apart!
I can honestly say I’ve never heard the complete lyrics to Yankee Doodle Dandy. I’m 30.
Actually, now that I think about it, these are not the lyrics I remember. Are there two different Yankee Doodle Songs? George never mentions putting a feather in his cap…can some one please explain this?!
George’s dancing skills..nice!..although I don’t understand that hold stiff-legged fast walking thing.
Wait, I thought Yankee Doodle Dandy was about the revolutionary war? They are making it about a horse jockey ..is there some symbolism I’m missing?! I’m so lost
I’m having a hard time figuring out if he is talking to his sister or his girlfriend…I know this is a product of not fully paying attention..but I keep thinking he is talking to his sister, then next thing I know it sounds like he is hitting on her…
He wants to drink champaign out of her slipper…mmmkay..the 20’s were a crazy time
Update…this lady is his girlfriend..not sister. Lol unless kissing your sister is acceptable in the 20’s
Bahaha Mary already knew he gave her song away…women…we always KNOW! Lol
I wish this movie was in color, I’d love to see what the gowns look like!
Another song that I know! You’re a Grand Old Flag!
This man dances like the tin man or scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz..
Brother is writing his sister a terrific wedding march…um, William..where is my composed wedding march?! Lol
He gave half of his company to his father. Where are my kleenex.
The telegram of the 20’s is twitter of today..
World War 1 begins…I spent most of this movie thinking we were already to World War 2. (I even went back and edited 40’s to 20’s because of this) How I passed U.S. History in highschool and college, I will never know.
OVER THERE OVER THERE SEND THE WORD SEND THE WORD OVER THERE…when ever I hear this song, I always think of Golden Girls.
Is this like the beginning of the USO? When does Bob Hope pop out?
Are there any living survivors of WW1? Is that a stupid question?
Update: Yes to stupid quesiton, and No to living survivors.
So Dad Cohan is about to pass, they say mom and sister are gone too. I’m guessing Mom has passed, but what happened to sister? They can’t just leave me hanging…
Googled it. # 1. I’m shook that this is based on a real story and real people 2. Josie died of heart disease at a young age.
Also, after more googling I have uncovered some truth. GEORGE’s BIRTHDAY ISN’T REALLY THE 4TH OF JULY! ITS ALL A LIE! (also he died on my birthday..45 years before I was born..)
Proof that every generation has a ‘millennial’. These crazy kids talking about their jive talk, not knowing who George M. Cohan is?!
They gave him a medal!
I can barely walk down the stairs without falling flat on my face. George dances down them like a majestic unicorn and doesn’t even say 1 curse word. That’s talent.
