300 Writing Prompts #10: What is Something You Purchased Used?

Listen, I’m a frugal gal who likes to stick to a budget, so if I can get a steal of a deal, I will. Below are some of my favorite items I have acquired 2nd hand.

Every car I’ve ever owned! I imagine this will be a common response among people. The second you drive a new car off the lot it will depreciate by as much as 11% of its value, and can lose up to 30% in the first year (I googled that info. I’m not that smart I promise..) Now I’m not good with math or numbers…but 30% seems like a lot especially since no one drives cars until they die like people did when I was little. If you have the money to buy a brand-new car without a loan more power to you, but if you search and find a good deal on a used car that won’t let you down then WOOOHOOO!

Books, lots and lots of books! Even in college at the book store (or on ebay) I would hunt out the used books first. Now, as an adult and avid reader, I get a thrill from digging through the shelves of used book stores as well as Goodwill! I wanted a book at Barnes and Noble the other day, 18.99. Found it at a local bookstore for 4.50. “But Jennifer, the spine will already be bent and worn…” Um, what do you think I’m going to do to it? Read it with white gloves and turn the pages with tweezers? I read in bed, in the pool and in the bathtub, that book isn’t going to know what hit it when I’m done with it!

My Pets! This sounds weird, but stick with me on this one. Every pet I have had has been rescued by us or adopted from rescues. For one reason or another their original owners realized they couldn’t take care of their sweet faces anymore and humanely surrender them to shelters. We came along, fell in love and brought them home where they are showered with kisses and treats daily.

So tell me readers, what is something you purchased used?

I am a Hoosier at heart who has moved to the heart of Texas with my husband Matthew, our cats Rowdy & Mosby and our dogs Lucy & Wrigley. Matthew is a Chief Flight instructor at a flight school in Austin and I care for my mother full time and write random thoughts and posts in between. I started writing this blog as a way to keep people back home updated on our lives here in Texas, and has turned into a way to relax, think and to make others laugh!

  1. I HATE buying new books! My parents live in the middle of no where and a few no where towns over, there is this one thrift shop. And their books are TEN CENTS!! Children’s books are TEN CENTS!! Adult’s books are like 25 and if it’s a hardcover it’s 50 or something outrageous like that. I go and just sit on the floor in their book section and say I’ve found my new home and I’m never leaving. But then I get sucked into their $2 shirts and 75 cent board games too….

  2. Yes to all of the above. I also rarely buy new clothes. Goodwill and consignment shops are my jam. Plus, who wants to wear what everyone else is wearing? I’d rather be rockin’ something from the 90s/early 2000s and get compliments than something bought brand new and not even get a bat of an eye.

Also furniture (not the upholstered kind). I have tables, chairs, bookshelves, and a couple of desks that I’ve picked up pre-loved, flipped, and now use throughout the house. I’ve more than likely saved a few thousand dollars by doing this. 🙂

  3. I’m with you. I will NEVER buy a new car. Unless I somehow find myself in a position where I am ridiculously wealthy and don’t know what to do with my countless billions. Even then I’ll probably opt for the used car. It’s so much more sensible.

And I love a used bookstore. I only miss a few things about living in the Raleigh area, and used bookstores is one of them. There were a handful that were pretty close by to apartment. Where I am now, there just aren’t any. At least, none that I know of. If there are, it’s the best kept secret in southwest Virginia. One time, in my Raleigh days, the state set up a used book sale at the state fair grounds where libraries from every county just got rid of all the books they didn’t need anymore. It was like heaven. I think I bought 30 books for about $10.
